The zebra danio or zebrafish (Brachydanio rerio) is tropical fish belonging to the minnow family (Cyprinidae). It grows to about 6 cm, making it one of the largest of the danios, and lives for around 5 years. Like other danios it is omnivorous and gets along well with other fish in community tanks. Zebra Danios serve as a common and useful model organism for studies of vertebrate development, in part because their embryos are transparent. Thus, researchers can mutate a danio and see the effects of the genetic changes on its development. Because of this interest it has been one of the first organisms to have its genome sequenced.

Because of this interest it has been one of the first organisms to have its genome sequenced.

This is a very sociable and peaceful fish that should be kept in a group whenever possible. They will adapt to most water conditions and in fact are considered to be very hardy. Zebra Danios will accept most foods and if conditioned on a varied diet including frozen foods such as blood worm and brine shrimp they will quickly come into condition and will breed readily. The females are easy to identify at breeding time because they look considerably more rounded. A good fish for a first breeding project.

One of the most popular aquarium fish which make excellent starter fish for newcomers to the hobby. They are widely available and when kept in a group make an excellent addition to any community tank.
