Pipe Fish

Micrognathus crinitus

Max Length: 20cm (7.9in)

Range:
Indo-Pacific Minimum Aquarium Size: 20 gal (76 litres)

Food: Vitamin enriched live brine shrimp and/or frozen mysid shrimp preferably, feed several times daily

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Will not harm inverts. Do not keep with corals or anemones that possess poisonous tentacles

Care: Very handsome and bolder than other pipe fishes, relatively common but requires the care of a dedicated aquarist. Needs shelter sites, caves etc. With none aggressive tank mates. Pipefish will only eat food that's moving in the water system. If it will not accept frozen mysid, switch to live brine shrimp that have been vitamin enriched.

There are about 200 different types of pipefish all around the world, but only a few of them are regularly imported.

Banded Pipefish are very slow eaters as they only have a small opening at their mouth. They eat small invertebrates such as mosquito larva and brine shrimp. It will suck the food into its mouth and swallow it whole because it has no teeth.

Most fish have scales however Banded Pipefish do not. Instead, they have bony plates which cover their body and protect them from enemies. For propulsion they fan their fins very fast and glide through the water.
