Distribution: Widely distributed in Central America
Size: Males up to 6 inches (15cm) Females usually smaller
Behaviour: Highly territorial, can cause plant damage
Food: All food accepted, try to feed mainly vegetarian
Include, where
possible, freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex, and ocean plankton, as
well as flake food and Cichlid pellets.
Requirements: Spacious aquarium with defendable shelter, robust or
artificial plants and rounded or flat topped stones. Chemistry of
the water is not critical.
Temperature: 68-77F (20-25C)
Breeding: Eggs can be laid either in caves or in the open. Fry
protected by both parents. Hatching takes only a few days.
Distinctively
stunning cichlid, very popular with aquarists which is a bit of a
surprise because of its relatively strong territorial instincts.
Making it somewhat aggressive towards other aquarium inmates. A well
matched pair is a joy to behold. The female has orange scales on her
lower body and dorsal fins and the male is larger, less colorful,
has a steeper forehead and longer fins. As it ages, the male will
acquire a fatty lump on the forehead.
